WandaVision
It was the furthest thing from my mind that a show like WandaVision would become a new favorite of mine. For some people this show was a “slow burn” but I absolutely loved it from the beginning with the throwbacks to I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dkye Show, Bewitched, I Dream of Genie, and other shows.
Episode #2: Don’t Touch That Dial — is still one of my favorite episodes. I don’t know what it is that makes me like it over some of the other more intense episodes, maybe it’s the wholesome nostalgia from the era? Maybe it’s also partly that things haven’t gotten too serious where the 4th barrier has been broken? Maybe it’s Wanda charisma and charm as she saves Vision disastrous attempts to do fake magic much like Genie or Samantha Stephens would in their respected shows. And of course that outfit… It’s not a revealing outfit, but something about it. Maybe I can get my Wife to trade in her Slave Leia costume in for a Wanda the Magician’s Assistant costume.
The early episodes might be a little underrated, but I know I am not alone in wanting to see a little bit more of the “Lost Episodes,” which are the moments we did not see on the actual show but were broadcast to SWORD. Hopefully we will see more moments of this early time period when we discover more of what happened, and how everything came to be. I understand that a lot of people may have tired from excessive episodes reflecting the 50s and 60s, and that the story line is jumping decades (maybe faster as time goes on). At this point it is pretty clear that the story is about the madness going on with the jumping of the decades, and staying in one too long could take away from that effect.
Episode #5: On A Very Special Episode — is being highlighted here not because it was just last week, but because it is also one that stood out to me, much like Episode #2. Maybe, again, it is the nostalgia? I have seen a lot of 80s sitcoms, but most I can’t even remember more than just a vivid memory or soundbite (currently Who’s the Boss theme is going through my head). But this episode was also the longest so far, and it really started to open up the mystery with Vision really prying to find out what is going on, and seeing who is around when things start to change (Agness and Wanda). The credits rolling as a way to try to end Vision and Wanda’s fight was epic! And I wasn’t too upset with a cliffhanger of Quicksilver at the door (I don’t think it is him — but learning more about the multiverse this week I could see a reason why it is).
So what has WandaVision done for us? Well besides painting a picture of a false utopia and mesmerizing us in mystery, it has actually gotten me and my family into taking a bigger look at the MCU. Up until this show, I have seen many of the movies but wasn’t invested as a watcher. As a casual watcher you don’t know how the story lines interconnect. We have pretty much re-watched all of the movies and included all the ones we haven’t seen. Because all the events that lead up to this episode have to do with Hydra, Thanos, The Avengers, Shield, etc, they all have little details to understand these characters backstories. But even without knowing much the show was quite enjoyable, the history is more about unraveling the mystery.
Episode #6: (Currently Untitled) will be available to watch in hours and I cannot wait!
Before I finish this up — one discussion I have had was what will happen after the last episode? I had thought that the season might be ended up with the people of West View being freed from the illusion, but still choosing to live within the augmented reality that exists, and that this augmented reality will continue until it is figured out how to keep Vision alive outside of West View. I think we will see what role Agness plays, but a bigger worser antagonist will be revealed and this will all lead into a second season, much in a similar fashion to how “Once Upon a Time” escalated (I can only imagine that there is someone reading this that does not like me drawing a parrallel). But then again this is labeled as a mini series, and depending on what kind of movies this will lead into, who knows. But one thing is that it will be hard to capture the spirit of this season.
